“One can imagine Palazzo Italia as a sprout planted years ago, which has become that tree of which the Project metaphorically gave shape, that is, that place where to cultivate and find the answers about the future of our well-being.”
Michele Molè
Palazzo Italia is a symbolic work of experimentation, sustainability and technological innovation, capable of telling the story of contemporary Italy on an international level. Designed for Milan Expo 2015, it is now home to the Human Technopole Foundation, in the Mind area. Inspired by the idea of an urban forest, the building stands out for its branched envelope, complex geometries and the texture of prefabricated panels, transforming the volume into a true architecture-sculpture.
Organized in four blocks around a large indoor plaza covered by a photovoltaic glass skylight, the Pavilion integrates exhibition, cultural and institutional functions into a fluid and immersive spatial experience. The interior path guides visitors through dynamic volumes, staircases, bridges and visual connections, creating a continuous architectural narrative between innovation, emotion and Italian identity.
Conceived as a near-zero energy (Nzeb) building, Palazzo Italia uses “i.active BIODYNAMIC” photocatalytic concrete, photovoltaic glass and advanced natural lighting strategies. 3D modeling and BIM ensured precision in construction, turning a complex idea into tangible reality.

Vision
The building draws inspiration from an urban forest: four blocks emerge around a large interior plaza covered by a photovoltaic skylight, evoking solid roots and light foliage. The branching envelope and geometric texture of the prefabricated panels transform the volume into an architecture-sculpture, where light and shadow modulate the perception of space and guide the visitor into an immersive and fluid experience. Stairs, bridges and visual pathways connect all levels, creating a coherent and dynamic architectural narrative.
Sustainability and technological innovation
Palazzo Italia is a synthesis of strong innovation and experimentation expressed in materials, the uniqueness of its technological systems (the outer skin and the roof sail) and the prefabrication of their components. The building is designed as a nearly zero-energy building: the “i.active BIODYNAMIC” photocatalytic concrete captures atmospheric pollutants, while photovoltaic glass and large skylights optimize the use of natural light and energy production.
The curved roof and complex geometry of the interior plaza enhance the energy efficiency and quality of the public space. Each construction element was managed through 3D modeling and BIM, ensuring accuracy, coordination and feasibility of a project with complex geometries.
Spatial path and visitor experience
The interior path guides visitors through a progressive experience, from the central plaza to the exhibition volumes, auditorium, conference rooms and representative offices. Dynamic volumes, sloping surfaces and light effects shaped by the envelope create changing atmospheres, amplifying the impact of the building’s cultural and scientific functions. Architecture thus becomes an instrument of narrative, emotion and identity, capable of representing contemporary Italy in the international context.
