The Messina Waterfront is an urban regeneration project that redefines the relationship between the city and the sea, rebuilding a physical, visual and functional continuity that is now fragmented. The master plan interprets the waterfront as a new strategic public infrastructure capable of generating urban, environmental and economic value.
The Messina Waterfront project proposes an integrated system of open spaces, functions and paths, transforming the current coastal marginality into an active and accessible urban landscape. The result is a new continuous waterfront, conceived as a place of relationship, identity and attractiveness, restoring Messina’s vocation as a contemporary and livable city on the water.

Functional system and urban mix
Messina’s Waterfront is configured as a unified and fluid design that replaces existing fragmentation with a new integrated landscape. The project builds an urban regeneration strategy capable of activating new real estate, tourism and cultural dynamics, redefining the role of the waterfront as an urban centrality.
Functions are organized in three integrated strategic areas: the redevelopment of the existing marina to the south, the new cultural citadel as an attractive urban hub, and the equipped marina to the north with nautical services, urban beach and sports activities. This functional mix supports an active and usable city model from a “15-minute” perspective.
Route system and urban accessibility
Landscape and public space as infrastructure
The master plan develops a continuous network of pedestrian and bicycle paths that extend the urban routes towards the sea. This system promotes permeability between the city and the waterfront, improving accessibility, soft mobility and daily use of public spaces.
The project interprets the landscape as a supporting structure: a system of diffuse greenery, articulated in parks, molded surfaces and public spaces, organizes the relationships between different functions. The Waterfront of Messina thus becomes an ecological and social infrastructure capable of generating urban quality and well-being.
Sustainability and environmental value
The Messina Waterfront integrates environmental sustainability strategies based on NZEB approaches, reuse of materials, and enhancement of local resources. The green system, together with the restoration of the strand and coastal ecosystems, contributes to microclimate improvement and urban resilience, in line with the 17 UN SDGs.
