The Shanghai Hongqiao Terminal T1 expansion project redefines one of China’s most strategic urban airports: not a simple renovation, but a deep reconfiguration capable of increasing international traffic from 5 to 15 million passengers by 2020.
The challenge is not only infrastructural. Hongqiao is an airport within the city: the project captures this urban nature to transform the terminal into an open, intermodal, multifunctional node-a new piece of Shanghai.

The wing and the ground
Two opposing gestures define the project. Above, a large canopy stretches over 600 meters like a sheet without thickness: a wing that unifies new and old terminal into a single expressive force, evoking together the ancestral protection of the canopy and the lightness of flight.
Below, the ground curves into an emerging organic volume with convexities and concavities that accommodate all the receptive and intermodal logistics required by the program.
From terminal to urban node
Hongqiao becomes an opportunity to endow the entire district with new infrastructure: convention spaces, an exhibition center, five-star hotels, tertiary towers. The airport ceases to be a closed, monofunctional facility to become an urban catalyst, integrated into the fabric and life of the city.
Intermodality as a project
At the heart of the system, the new intermodal station connects air traffic, subway, bus and private mobility in a single node. Positioned under the hotel facing the terminal, it is the device that transforms Hongqiao into an accessible, fluid and future-oriented hub of urban mobility.
