The new Istat Headquarters is not simply an office building: it is the architectural translation of a complex institutional identity that is both rigorous and open to change. An urban and systemic project, designed to give back to the city a part of Rome that is now degraded and to offer workers and citizens a new public landscape to inhabit.
The concept is based on the duality that defines Istat itself: the precision of statistical science on the one hand, its ability to read and interpret the changing society on the other.

Matrix and sequence: the mathematical dimension
Statistical logic – collection, processing, variation – is translated into architecture through the idea of matrix. Similar geometric modules, repeated and slightly varied, build a rich urban texture that meets Istat’s organizational needs without sacrificing complexity. Order and rhythm as a form of expression.
Openness and embrace: the civic dimension
Solids and Voids, Urban Osmosis
The rigor of the sequence is overlaid with a dynamic and inclusive layout. The cut that opens toward the square, the volumes that face it in an embracing gesture, the interior courtyards and gardens: everything builds an idea of urban community. The venue does not close in on its function, but offers itself to the city.
The relationship between architectural volumes and open spaces is fluid and osmotic. The unity of the complex arises from the summation of multiple parts: not a monolith, but a system in which each element contributes to defining the whole. A grammar that rejects the exclusionary monumentality of many institutional headquarters.
Landscape as social infrastructure
The landscape dimension is not decorative: it is structural. The public spaces generated by the sequence of courtyards, gardens, and squares become a social infrastructure for workers and the neighborhood. A rich and informal environment that balances distributive efficiency with authentic environmental quality.
A landmark for Rome and for the future
The project is designed to become a recognizable reference at the urban and international scale-a symbol capable of expressing the vision of an institution that not only collects data, but also helps define the country’s collective identity.
